Aided by FAME II scheme, electric buses are finding new takers. They are found in Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad and other cities. Their numbers are growing, an indication of it was had at the Prawaas 2019 exhibition in Navi Mumbai recently. While the proliferation of electric buses is good for improving the air quality in cities, their rise has to be supported by a robust plan for sustenance. A whole new infrastructure is necessary. There is a need to find environment friendly ways to generate electricity. There is a need to ensure that it is available at cost effective prices and in the quantity required. There is a need for a local supplier base to come up. Merely building bodies and a few components, or assembling the battery packs will not suffice. If all this is not done quickly, gas and hydrogen are likely to prove as better alternatives.
