Volvo Buses India has expanded its premium coach portfolio with the launch of the Volvo 9600 Seater-Sleeper, introducing what the company describes as India’s first original equipment (OE)-built seater-sleeper coach. Unveiled at PRAWAAS 5.0 in Gandhinagar, the new coach is designed to offer operators greater flexibility by combining premium seating and sleeper configurations on a single platform.
The launch comes as India’s intercity bus market continues to witness growing demand for premium travel, driven by rising passenger expectations for comfort, safety and convenience. At the same time, operators are increasingly looking for solutions that improve fleet utilisation while catering to multiple route requirements, including scheduled intercity services, tourism and pilgrimage travel.
Built on Volvo’s globally proven 9600 platform, the 15-metre coach is powered by the VEDX8 diesel engine paired with an I-Shift automated transmission. The vehicle accommodates 51 passengers, featuring 27 premium reclining seats with calf support, 21 upper-deck sleeper berths and three rear sleeper berths. It also offers 6 cubic metres of luggage space, enabling operators to maximise passenger and baggage capacity on long-distance routes.
Speaking at the launch, S S Gill, Chief Commercial Officer, VE Commercial Vehicles, said the Indian bus industry is witnessing a shift towards premium mobility, with operators demanding higher productivity alongside enhanced passenger experiences. He noted that the Volvo 9600 Seater-Sleeper has been developed to deliver greater operational flexibility without compromising on safety, comfort or luxury.
Suresh Chettiar, Executive Vice President – Bus Division, VE Commercial Vehicles, said the new coach builds on the success of the Volvo 9600 platform by offering operators the ability to serve both short- and long-distance routes using a single vehicle configuration. He added that the seater-sleeper layout allows operators to address diverse passenger requirements while improving fleet utilisation.
The coach introduces several passenger-focused features, including redesigned interiors, premium sleeper berths, enhanced ambient lighting, integrated entertainment provisions, USB charging points, privacy curtains, an onboard kitchenette and a fully integrated toilet to improve long-distance travel comfort.
On the safety front, Volvo has equipped the 9600 Seater-Sleeper with a comprehensive suite of advanced driver assistance and connected technologies. These include a 360-degree camera system, Camera Monitor System (electronic mirrors), Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), Driver State Monitoring System, and an Alcohol Interlock System designed to prevent vehicle operation if alcohol is detected. The coach also features an integrated telematics platform that enables operators to monitor vehicle location, speed, fuel consumption, performance and operational alerts in real time.
With the introduction of the Volvo 9600 Seater-Sleeper, Volvo Buses India further strengthens its presence in the premium intercity coach segment, offering operators a flexible mobility solution that combines passenger comfort, advanced safety systems and connected fleet management technologies in a single platform.
