At the intersection of innovation and utility lie a distinct and celebrated breed of transport solutions built to go beyond conventional cargo-hauling, writes Ashish Bhatia.

For its contribution to special-purpose logistics, sustainability, and operational versatility, the SML Samrat Dual Cabin CNG was named Special Application CV of the Year at the 16Th Apollo CV Awards 2025. The recognition celebrates its unique positioning, customer-centric features, and robust engineering that align well with evolving fleet needs and environmental mandates. With a thoughtful combination of utility, durability, and green mobility, SML Isuzu’s Samrat Dual Cabin is more than just a truck it’s a tailored solution for a nation on the move. The SML Isuzu Samrat Dual Cabin with multiple fuel options (Diesel, CNG) is a purpose-built Special Application Vehicle that epitomises this niche. With the ability to simultaneously transport manpower and material, it addresses a key gap in sectors that demand flexibility, ruggedness, and a clean operational footprint.
A Dual-Utility Workhorse
At its core, the Samrat Dual Cabin is an 11.12-tonne GVW truck that smartly blends crew-carrying comfort with robust load-lugging ability. Designed with a seating capacity of D+6 and a 10 ft. cargo deck, the vehicle is well-suited for applications ranging from infrastructure maintenance and disaster response to municipal utility services and industrial logistics. The driver and six passengers enjoy a comfortably spaced cabin, with the extra-long body ensuring no compromise on load volume. Its powertrain is anchored by a 3.45-litre (3455 cc) four-cylinder CRDI engine, delivering a solid 108 bhp at 2800 rpm and 315 Nm of torque at 1800 rpm, ample to navigate hilly terrains and city streets alike. With 17 per cent gradeability, it’s engineered to perform reliably on steep inclines and uneven terrains, ideal for semi-urban and off-grid operations.

POWERTRAIN OF CHOICE
Understanding diverse customer priorities, SML Isuzu offers the Samrat Dual Cabin in both Diesel and CNG variants. The diesel version is priced at Rs. 21.70 lakh, while the CNG variant commands Rs. 23.30 lakh (Ex-showroom and before taxes). The CNG option, in particular, has gained attention for its environment-friendly profile and running cost benefits. Its 240-litre capacity (distributed across four 60-litre cylinders) ensures ample range, especially in regions with expanding green fuel infrastructure. The dual-fuel strategy allows SML to target environmentally conscious fleet operators and government bodies, without alienating traditional buyers who rely on the diesel infrastructure and torque characteristics.
Engineered for Utility and Endurance
The Samrat Dual Cabin doesn’t just win on paper, it excels in real-world conditions. Built on a D-type chassis frame reinforced with cross members, it offers exceptional durability and strength for tough applications. The semi-elliptical multi-leaf spring suspension with hydraulic telescopic shock absorbers (front and rear) provides excellent load-bearing capacity and ride comfort, even when fully loaded.A 310 mm single plate dry clutch, five-speed synchromesh gearbox, and tilt-telescopic power steering come standard, making driving and manoeuvrability intuitive despite its size. Safety and control are elevated with dual circuit S-Cam full air brakes, a critical feature for a truck of this scale. The vehicle’s ground clearance of 228 mm and tight turning radius further enhance its usability in tight or unpredictable environments. Its load body dimensions of 3050 mm x 2060 mm x 585 mm provide ample space for tools, rescue equipment, spares, or raw material. Meeting the upcoming latest truck body compliance, this product will be available with air-conditioned cabin for the driver and crew comfort, from June’ 2025.

The CNG variant is particularly attractive in cities pursuing carbon neutrality and green mobility strategies.
Standing Out in a Global Context
Globally, dual-cab utility vehicles are gaining acceptance for their multipurpose design, commonly seen in mining, construction, and defence sectors. What makes the SML Samrat Dual Cabin stand out is its full-fledged truck chassis, rather than being built on a lighter pick-up or LCV platform. This allows it to carry higher payloads, offer better road presence, and withstand rougher duty cycles. Moreover, its dedicated engineering, rather than a retrofitted standard model, brings authenticity and purpose-driven design, an edge over many global offerings that are adapted from passenger platforms.
