The union minister for transport, Nitin Gadkari, has once again reiterated the government’s move to create a separate transport department. The minister recently expressed that his ministry could soon set up a separate transport department to reduce the burden currently borne by the ministry of Road, Transport and Highways, and cut down on red tapism. The new department would directly oversee the automobile sector, and at issues like the emission norms and a safety framework through a dedicated set of resources at its disposal. For now, the cabinet secretariat and the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) are known to have received a proposal from the Ministry of Road, Transport and Highways. The same is being looked into.
