The International Symposium on Lighting (ISOL-2015), organised by International Centre for Automotive Technology (ICAT) late last year saw the auto industry delve upon arresting road deaths. A discussion on this topic was jointly put in place by tier automotive lighting supplier Hella and ICAT. Drawing attention to one road death every four minutes in the country, Ramashankar Pandey, Managing Director, Hella India Lighting, in his address focused upon the involvement of commercial vehicles. He cited an example of the full LED tail lamps developed and produced locally and made available for the first time in India for trucks, which provide four-meters of extra braking distance in an accidental situation due to its superior LED technology, enhancing safety. The panel discussion that followed gave rise to views such as the need for education and individual behavioural change should form an integral part of turning Indian roads safer. Engineering and regulation would not be enough. The panelists agreed upon initiating a nationwide awareness campaign on road safety and complement the engineering excellence brought about by the various stakeholders in the area of visibility and lighting through nationwide education and enforcement of such lifesaving technologies. Hella India Lighting won at the ISOL-2015. ICAT announced its first ever ISOL awards at the event.
