The Delhi Government is said to have issued a warning to cab aggregators including Ola and Uber. The government is claimed to have warned the aggregators of dire consequences if they do not roll back surcharge pricing. Surcharge pricing is levied on passengers during the peak hours of commute. Cab aggregators charge passengers a higher than base rate charge per kilometer. The government warned aggregators of their cabs being impounded if they were found to indulge in surcharge pricing. Aimed at making it easier for people of the capital city to commute, and especially at a time when the second phase of the odd-even scheme is being employed, the warning has shed light on the issues affecting the public transport system of India’s capital city. While the aggregators make an attempt to justify the surcharge, the city is facing a severe shortage of aggregator cabs in the absence of a robust public vehicle transport system. The average waiting time of three minutes is claimed to have gone up to as much as 25 minutes or more. Fresh objections are being raised over issues like the per minute charging and cabs plying with non-Delhi permits.
