As compact construction equipment gains relevance across urban and industrial sites, Bobcat used EXCON 2025 to underline application-led engineering, writes Upendra Kasbekar.

At EXCON 2025, Bobcat reinforced its long-standing positioning as a global specialist in compact construction equipment, showcasing a focused portfolio of skid steer loaders, mini excavators and backhoe loaders tailored for Indian operating conditions. Rather than headline-grabbing launches, the emphasis remained on machine capability, attachment versatility and real-world productivity.

COMPACT MACHINES, APPLICATION-LED THINKING

Skid steer loaders formed the core of Bobcat’s display. Models such as the S450, S510 and S590 illustrated how compact machines can be scaled across power and capacity without losing manoeuvrability. The S450, powered by a 49 hp diesel engine, offers a rated operating capacity of around 608 kg and an operating weight of approximately 2.3 tonnes, making it suitable for municipal works, site maintenance and urban construction. Its compact footprint and multi-attachment capability allow it to operate efficiently in confined spaces.

Stepping up, the S510 delivers 55 hp with a rated operating capacity close to 850 kg, while the S590, producing nearly 69 hp, offers a rated operating capacity of about 907 kg. These higher-capacity machines address heavier material handling, grading and infrastructure tasks while retaining the versatility expected from skid steer platforms. A wide range of attachments trenching buckets, sweepers, augers, grapples and compact rollers enables a single machine to perform multiple functions across a work cycle.

Bobcat also highlighted its mini excavator range, positioned for trenching, foundation work and utility installation in space-constrained environments. Designed for ease of operation and low ownership costs, these machines cater to contractors seeking compact yet dependable excavation solutions for urban and semi-urban projects.

MINI EXCAVATORS AND BACKHOES

The backhoe loader lineup on display included the Bobcat B900 Extra and B900 Ultra, reinforcing the brand’s intent to address Indian and export requirements distinctly. The B900 Extra, a 4×2 backhoe loader, has been developed specifically for Indian operating conditions and customer demand. It is powered by an Ashok Leyland diesel engine, paired with Carraro-proven axles and Parker hydraulic pumps, ensuring easy serviceability and consistent performance across applications such as construction, utilities and material handling. The B900 Ultra, offered in a 4×4 configuration, is positioned as an export-oriented model, retaining similar core aggregates while offering improved traction for demanding terrains. Both machines support multiple bucket and attachment configurations and feature extended service intervals, including longer hydraulic oil change cycles, aimed at reducing downtime and overall operating costs.

Across categories, Bobcat’s focus on operator comfort, visibility and serviceability was evident. Ergonomic cabins, intuitive controls and accessible service points are aimed at reducing fatigue and downtime critical factors as labour availability tightens and productivity expectations rise.

At EXCON 2025, Bobcat’s message was clear, compact machines are no longer auxiliary equipment. When correctly specified and applied, they offer measurable gains in productivity, utilisation and return on investment across India’s evolving job sites.
