Michelin has introduced the X Multi Energy Z2, a new-generation truck and bus tyre developed for Indian operating conditions and tested on Indian highways. Made in India, the tyre promises improved fuel efficiency, longer tyre life and enhanced robustness, writes Upendra Kasbekar.

Michelin has expanded its commercial vehicle tyre portfolio with the launch of the X Multi Energy Z2, positioning it as India’s most fuel-efficient tyre in the all-position category. Scheduled to be available nationwide from 1 November 2026, the new tyre has been developed to address three major cost considerations for fleet operators: fuel consumption, tyre replacement and vehicle downtime.

FUEL SAVINGS THAT MATTER

With fuel accounting for approximately 50% of a fleet’s overall expenditure, improving fuel efficiency remains a significant opportunity for transport operators. The MICHELIN X Multi Energy Z2 is claimed to deliver up to 6 per cent fuel savings in the 295/80R22.5 tubeless size and up to 13 per cent in the 295/90R20 tube-type size, compared with leading competitors in the respective dimensions.

According to Michelin, these savings can improve fleet margins by up to 3 per cent while reducing CO₂ emissions by up to eight tonnes. The results are based on tests conducted by Michelin’s R&D teams on Indian highways, using an Ashok Leyland 16-wheeler 4825 between Namakkal and Dindigul in June 2026. Actual fuel savings will vary depending on vehicle configuration, load, tyre pressure, terrain and driving conditions.

LONGER TYRE LIFE

Beyond fuel efficiency, tyre longevity is another important factor influencing fleet operating costs. Michelin claims that the X Multi Energy Z2 delivers up to 25 per cent more tyre life than the nearest competition in the same size. This improvement is attributed to its Carbion blend, an innovative tread compound designed to provide a stronger and more consistent structure, supporting longer service life and reducing replacement frequency.

The tyre also offers 11 per cent better summit strength compared with leading competition, according to Michelin’s internal testing. The improvement is intended to enhance robustness and reduce the likelihood of tyre-related downtime, helping fleets maintain vehicle availability and productivity.

GRIP AND STABILITY

Handling and traction remain important considerations for heavy commercial vehicles operating across varying road and weather conditions. In the 295/80R22.5 dimension, the X Multi Energy Z2 is claimed to offer improved wet and dry handling compared with leading competition in the same size.

Michelin’s patented InfiniCoil technology helps optimise the tyre’s contact patch and maintain stability throughout its service life. The tyre also offers up to 5 per cent larger footprint area compared with leading competition in the same dimension, which is intended to improve grip and traction.

TECHNOLOGY AND SUSTAINABILITY

The X Multi Energy Z2 combines performance improvements with Michelin’s broader focus on sustainable mobility. The tyre incorporates up to 30 per cent recyclable materials and is manufactured at the company’s Chennai facility, which Michelin describes as one of its greenest manufacturing plants. The facility operates with a zero-carbon footprint and sources nearly 45 per cent of its energy from renewable sources, according to the company.

Speaking about the launch, Shantanu Deshpande, Managing Director, Michelin India, said, “India’s commercial vehicle sector is the backbone of the nation’s economy, and fleet owners are increasingly looking beyond the upfront cost of a tyre to its overall value throughout its life. Developed for Indian highways, the MICHELIN X Multi Energy Z2 addresses these needs by combining fuel efficiency, longer tyre life and enhanced robustness to help reduce Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). With up to 13 per cent fuel savings, 25 per cent higher mileage and 11 per cent better ply strength enabled by our Duracore technology, it is designed to help fleet operators optimise operating costs, improve productivity and strengthen their margins. At Michelin, we are committed to being a performance partner to Indian fleet owners, bringing advanced, locally relevant mobility solutions that help make every kilometre count.”

Michelin is also complementing its tyre portfolio with services covering tyre management, monitoring and fleet management. These solutions are intended to help operators plan maintenance, monitor tyre performance and minimise downtime as fleet operations become increasingly digitised.

The MICHELIN X Multi Energy Z2 will be available through Michelin Tyres & Services stores and approximately 300 authorised dealers across India from 1 November 2026. The launch further strengthens Michelin’s presence in the Indian commercial vehicle tyre market, with a product focused on improving operating efficiency and reducing the overall cost of fleet ownership.
