Tata Motors Ltd. has recorded its highest annual patent filing performance for its commercial vehicle business in FY26, filing 144 patent applications during the year.

The filings are aligned with the company’s focus areas across vehicle safety, reliability, total cost of ownership (TCO), occupant comfort, and future mobility technologies, including electric and hydrogen-based commercial vehicle platforms.

In addition to the patent applications, Tata Motors Commercial Vehicles also filed 21 design applications and 35 copyright applications during the financial year. The company secured 15 patent grants in FY26, taking its cumulative granted patent count to over 650.

Commenting on the development, Aniruddha Kulkarni, Vice President and Head – Engineering, Tata Motors Ltd., said the milestone reflects the company’s continued focus on engineering-led innovation and future-ready mobility solutions.

The latest filings indicate growing activity around next-generation commercial vehicle technologies, particularly in areas linked to electrification, alternative fuels, safety systems, and operational efficiency.

From a commercial vehicle perspective, the development highlights the increasing role of in-house engineering and intellectual property creation as OEMs prepare for evolving mobility requirements and tighter efficiency and emissions expectations.

The company has been actively expanding its alternate fuel commercial vehicle portfolio across battery electric, hydrogen internal combustion, hydrogen fuel cell, LNG, and CNG platforms, alongside developments in connected and software-enabled vehicle technologies.

The record filing activity also reflects the broader shift within the commercial vehicle industry towards technology-driven product development, where innovation is increasingly linked not only to powertrains, but also to safety, lifecycle efficiency, and intelligent mobility systems.
