Truck owners and operators went on a nationwide strike to protest against the hike in diesel prices and third-party insurance premium in June 2018. An estimated 90 lakh trucks went off the road according to industry sources. Sources mentioned that over 60 per cent trucks did not ply. Putting the blame on high taxes levied by the Centre and states rather than buy the government argument that fuel prices rose because of the international price rise, transporters, claimed industry sources, demanded that petroleum products be brought under the Goods and Services Tax (GST). Transporters are also known to have requested Insurance Regulatory Development Authority (IRDA) of India to detariff third party insurance premium as done in the case of comprehensive insurance policy. Third party basic insurance premiums have been relentlessly rising for many years, and at a fairly steep rate.
