A bio-CNG plant has come into existence at the Mahindra World City (MWC), Chennai. A joint CSR initiative between Mahindra Research Valley (MRV) and Mahindra World City Developers (MWCD), the bio-CNG plant will help create green energy from waste as an attempt to reduce carbon footprint. The plant will work on an aerobic digestion of biomass to produce bio-gas, and is further capable of being upgraded to an auto grade CNG equivalent. The resultant purified gas will be compressed to 200 bars and stored in cylinders to power automobiles. The manure coming out of the plant will be utilised as fertiliser or compost along with organic material for producing compost fertiliser. In MWC the bio-gas will be used to generate power and fuel CNG buses and tractors. The power generated will also be used for street lighting, buses for free shuttle service and tractors for cultivation.
