Amazon India is preparing to deploy around 1,000 Eicher electric trucks for its Amazon Now operations, marking one of the country’s largest dedicated electric truck deployments in the ecommerce and quick commerce sector.
The deployment is being carried out in collaboration with VE Commercial Vehicles (VECV), which has developed a customised version of the Eicher Pro-X electric truck specifically for Amazon’s high-frequency intra-city logistics operations.
The trucks will primarily operate between Amazon’s larger fulfilment hubs located on city outskirts and its rapidly expanding network of micro-fulfilment centres positioned closer to consumers for faster deliveries.
Amazon has already inducted around 50 of these electric trucks into operations and plans to scale the fleet to over 1,000 units by 2028. Initial deployments will begin across Delhi-NCR, Bengaluru, and Mumbai.
The development comes as Amazon aggressively expands its Amazon Now quick commerce business across India. The company recently announced plans to expand the service to 100 cities with a network of more than 1,000 micro-fulfilment centres.
Designed specifically for urban logistics applications, the Eicher Pro-X electric trucks are expected to operate across daily routes of around 100–180 km while supporting multiple trips between facilities. The vehicles also feature fast-charging capability with charging time of approximately 50 minutes.
Commenting on the development, Abhinav Singh, Vice President, Operations, Amazon India and Australia, said the company continues to deepen electric mobility integration across its logistics operations, where over 12,000 EVs are already deployed across India.
SS Gill, Chief Commercial Officer, VECV, said the Eicher Pro-X electric truck was co-developed with Amazon keeping ecommerce and quick commerce operating requirements in focus, particularly around efficiency, reliability, and scalability.
Amazon and VECV have been working together on electric truck development since 2022. Earlier in 2025, Amazon had also deployed more than 100 electric trucks across cities including Delhi NCR, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Kolkata as part of its broader transportation decarbonisation strategy.
From a commercial vehicle perspective, the development highlights how electrification is gradually moving beyond last-mile delivery operations into middle-mile and intra-city logistics networks. As ecommerce and quick commerce players continue expanding urban fulfilment infrastructure, demand for compact, high-utilisation electric trucks is expected to grow significantly.
The deployment also reflects a broader industry trend where OEMs are increasingly co-developing application-specific electric commercial vehicles in partnership with large fleet and logistics operators.
