With Goldstone, backed by BYD of China, succeeding to outpace established players in the CV industry to bag orders by quoting far less than others could, Adani Enterprises, claim industry sources, is looking to enter the ebus space with the help of a Taiwanese electric bus maker. Sources mention that an announcement to this effect will be made soon as plans to set up a manufacturing facility in Gujarat are being chalked out. The tie-up with Taiwanese ebus maker is said to be purely technical in nature, what with Adani keen to take advantage of the aggressive promotion of electric vehicles for mass transit by the Indian Government. Sources point out that the department of heavy industries sanctioned Rs.440 crores to 11 states in December 2017 to procure electric buses, electric taxis and e-autos as a pilot project under Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid & Electric Vehicles (FAME) scheme. The government is said to be working on the second phase of FAME, which would offer incentives to manufacturers of electric vehicles for public transport, battery manufacturers and charging infrastructure developers. The scheme is expected to extend huge subsidy support to electric bus segment as its policy draft is claimed to provide incentives for purchase of bulk batteries for a fleet of above 50, and for bulk procurement of EVs.
