Volvo is all geared up to introduce its hybrid technology in India through its range of buses. The first Volvo hybrid city bus pilot will take off in Navi Mumbai as part of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport (NMMT) fleet, a major transportation service in Navi Mumbai and the surrounding areas. It was recently that the Indian government launched FAME India (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric vehicles in India) scheme. FAME offers incentives on electric and hybrid vehicles in a bid to promote environmentally friendly vehicles. Looking to leverage its early bird advantage in hybrid technology and electromobility, Volvo hybrid buses could play an important role for cities that want to reduce vehicle emissions. Expressed Hakan Agnevall, President, Volvo Buses, “I am very proud that Volvo is the first bus manufacturer to introduce hybrid buses in India.” The Volvo hybrid buses will be manufactured in the company’s Bangalore facility. A big plyer in hybrid technology with more than 2,300 hybrid buses sold to over 20 countries, Volvo hybrid buses claim to offer a fuel consumption which is up to 39 per cent lower than that of regular diesel buses, which in turn cuts carbon dioxide emissions by the same amount and nitrogen oxides and particles by 50 per cent.
