16 Hydrogen-Powered Trucks to Hit Key Freight Corridors

Tata Motors, has taken a major step towards sustainable transportation with the country’s first-ever hydrogen-powered truck trials. The initiative, launched under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, aims to revolutionize long-haul cargo transport with zero-emission solutions.
The trial was flagged off by Nitin Gadkari, Hon’ble Union Minister of Road Transport & Highways, and Shri Pralhad Joshi, Hon’ble Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy. The event also saw the presence of Mr. Girish Wagh, Executive Director, Tata Motors, along with other key government and industry representatives.
A Game-Changer for Green Freight Transport
Tata Motors has deployed 16 advanced hydrogen-powered trucks for this trial, which will run for up to 24 months. These vehicles will be tested on major freight routes across Mumbai, Pune, Delhi-NCR, Surat, Vadodara, Jamshedpur, and Kalinganagar.
The trucks will operate on two cutting-edge hydrogen technologies:
- Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine (H2-ICE)
- Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (H2-FCEV)
Among the key models in the trial are:
- Tata Prima H.55S (Available in both H2-ICE and H2-FCEV variants)
- Tata Prima H.28 (Advanced H2-ICE truck)
These trucks offer an impressive range of 300-500 km, ensuring cost-effective and high-performance transportation. They also feature premium Prima cabins, advanced driver-assist systems, and enhanced safety features for better driver comfort and productivity.
Government’s Push for Hydrogen Mobility
At the launch event, Shri Nitin Gadkari highlighted the transformative potential of hydrogen:
“Hydrogen is the fuel of the future, offering a path to low-carbon, energy-independent transportation. This initiative will accelerate India’s shift towards green and smart trucking. I congratulate Tata Motors for leading this change.”
Shri Pralhad Joshi also emphasized the importance of hydrogen in India’s clean energy goals:
“Green hydrogen will play a crucial role in decarbonizing India’s transport sector. This trial is a significant step in realizing our energy independence and sustainability ambitions.”
