As India gets on the hybrid and electric bandwagon under the FAME programme, in UK, a revolutionary low-carbon technology company for the truck and bus industry, Charge R&D Ltd., has claimed to have developed a modular truck and bus diesel (electric) hybrid driveline that would revolutionise the CV sector. Close to being ‘production’ ready according to Glenn Saint who heads the Oxfordshire-based company, and as its technical director, a six-tonne GVW prototype based on the Fuso Canter cab and the Charge driveline is claimed to be undergoing trials. Saint, who was earlier the chief technical officer and deputy chief executive at Ashok Leyland subsidiary Optare, is said to have expressed an opinion that his company will be soon able to demonstrate that they have found the ultimate target of emissions-free heavy vehicle technology. Ultra-low emissions at much less than the cost of diesel power that is. The cost of the Charge driveline (excluding battery cost) will be no more than that of a conventional comparable diesel engine driveline, Saint is known to have promised. It is designed for use in an exceptionally broad range of vans, trucks and buses, with gross weights from 2.5- to 26-tonnes.
