At the JEC World 2016, a global event for composite materials, Renault Trucks was presented with a reward together with its partner Solvay in the automotive, structural items category. The innovation prize was given for producing an item (a structural module on the front of a cab truck) of the cab structure in thermoplastic composite materials reinforced by continuous glass fibres. Already used in many sectors, such as aeronautics, composite materials are lighter than steel, while remaining just as resilient and making it possible to reduce the number of parts required. The Renault Trucks’ engineers concentrated on developing structural parts for the front of the cab that would reduce the unpainted cab’s frontal mass by 25 per cent as compared with its steel equivalent. Also a part of the item were suppliers HBW Gubesch (Germany), SIKA (Switzerland) and Böllhoff (France).
