The Yamuna Development Authority is working on a plan to introduce pod taxis in Uttar Pradesh, making it the first state in India to do so. pod taxis are compact, driverless electric vehicles that will be able to transport people quickly. They run along a pre-determined route, constructed separately from normal traffic on highways.
The Noida International Airport, also known as Jewar Airport is currently under construction in the Gautam Buddha Nagar District of Uttar Pradesh. This Airport is said to be served by pod taxis along with the proposed Film City to be built. The 14-kilometre pod taxi route is expected to traverse all of the Yamuna Authority’s industrial sectors and will feature 12 stations, including Film City, Sector 34, Rabupura Village, Toy Park, Apparel Park, MSME Park, and Handicraft Park.
The government has instructed the authority to study the pod taxi systems used in London, South Korea, and Japan. The anticipated fare for the Noida pod taxi will be Rs 8 per kilometre. The Uttar Pradesh government may receive the Yamuna Authority’s report for approval, with a meeting scheduled by the end of the month. Once a decision has been made, global tenders will be issued to select a company to develop the project. Post that, the developer is expected to be chosen within two months. According to reports, work on the Noida International Airport is progressing, with 45 per cent of the project already completed, including 90 per cent of the runway’s construction. Construction is expected to be completed ahead of schedule, with more personnel working on the site.
