Nissan Motor Company is known to have issued a termination of licence notice to Nissan Ashok Leyland Technologies, one of its three joint venture companies with Ashok Leyland. Both, Nissan and Ashok Leyland, hold a 50:50 stake in the joint venture. The other joint venture, Ashok Leyland Nissan Vehicles, involves the manufacture of light commercial vehicles. Ashok Leyland has a 51 per cent stake in it. The third joint venture, Nissan Ashok Leyland Powertrain, produces engines. Nissan owns 51 per cent stake in it. Sources close to Nissan have claimed that the company is working with Ashok Leyland to reach a mutually agreeable solution. Nissan’s issuance of the termination of licence notice is said to have been in response to the legal notice sent by Ashok Leyland to it for utilising the joint venture-owned equipment to make cars instead of light commercial vehicles. If the sources are to be believed, Nissan has decided to end the joint venture as it is of the opinion that Ashok Leyland has not paid royalty worth close to Rs.200 crore.
