The new auto policy will be finalised in the next three months, claim industry sources. They mention that the policy would emphasise on emission-linked taxation for automobiles and include a technology agnostic green mobility roadmap. According to sources, discussions with various stakeholders have been on for the past six months to frame the new policy, and to ensure that it envisages a single nodal regulatory body for the auto industry. While a draft cabinet note on the policy is being prepared, and will be circulated shortly among departments concerned, the policy will put greater impetus on the FAME scheme, claim sources. They state that discussion is on to strengthen the FAME (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric & Hybrid Vehicles) scheme with the view of faster adoption of eco-friendly automobile technologies. The new policy is also expected to address industry concerns like harmonisation of standards for auto components used by OEMs and those in the aftermarket, and the logistics challenges faced.
