The long-awaited Mumbai Metro Line 14, connecting Kanjurmarg to Badlapur, is moving closer to reality as the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) accelerates preparations for its construction. With plans to begin work within a year, the metro line is expected to significantly cut travel time between the two locations and enhance connectivity for thousands of daily commuters.
Key Milestone: Consultant Appointment for Environmental Clearance
To facilitate the project, MMRDA has initiated the process of appointing a consultant responsible for preparing an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report and securing approvals from the forest and environment departments. A tender for this appointment was issued recently, marking a major step forward in the project’s progress.
According to a Loksatta report, once the consultant is onboard, all necessary formalities will be completed within a year, setting the stage for construction to commence in 2025.
A Game-Changer for Badlapur Commuters
For Badlapur residents, Metro Line 14 has been a long-pending demand. Currently, the commute between Badlapur and Mumbai takes 1.5 to 2 hours, but with the metro, this is expected to reduce significantly, offering a seamless and time-efficient transit option.
The project is part of Mumbai’s expanding metro network, which currently spans 337 km across multiple corridors. The addition of Metro Line 14 will provide crucial last-mile connectivity to the fast-growing suburbs of Mumbai.
Awaiting Final Government Approval
The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for Metro Line 14 has been prepared by Milan Metro, a consulting firm, and has already received approval from IIT Bombay. The next step involves state government clearance, following which MMRDA will initiate the bidding process for construction.
Environmental Clearances: A Critical Step
Since the metro line passes through ecologically sensitive areas, including Thane Creek, Parsik Hill, and the Flamingo Sanctuary, obtaining environmental clearances is a key priority. The appointed consultant will oversee the preparation of impact reports and secure necessary permissions to ensure a smooth and timely start to the project.
