Karnataka government is contemplating to have the department of legal metrology govern the online taxi services running in the state. The department of Legal Metrology (formerly known as Department of Weights and measures) is accountable for maintaining accuracy in all weights measures used in trade and the commerce industry. Additionally its role involves protecting consumer interest. According to U T Khader, Minister of food, civil supplies and consumer affairs, the department has commenced the process of drafting the new policy. In future, it is also planned to have the department monitor the fare charged by online taxi aggregators like it’s existing role in monitoring auto-rickshaws fares in the state.
