A member of the National Road Safety Council has advocated for the mandatory installation of high-security registration plates (HSRP) on all vehicles in Maharashtra. It is noted that vehicles registered since April 1, 2019, are already equipped with HSRP.
HSRP’S IMPORTANCE |
- Replacing all number plates with HSRP is necessary as organized crime is facilitated by counterfeit number plates it is easy for criminals to avoid detection that way
- Ordinary number plates are made in such a way that they resemble HSRP, but lack special HSRP features, including unique laser codes that are updated on the transport department’s Vahan portal.
- Ordinary plates also lack other security and safety features of HSRP such as high visibility in low light due to retro-reflectivity.
HSRPs are exclusively fitted at designated automobile vendors and dealerships authorized by state government authorities.

- Tenders were floated last August and dealers will be appointed once the bidding process is completed

Kamaljeet Soi, MEMBER, NATIONAL ROAD SAFETY COUNCIL, said,”I will meet senior state transport officials to push for speedy implementation of HSRP for 66 old vehicles (registered before April 2019) as it is a matter of national security.”
