Fuel rates remain static on December third for the 30th consecutive day after the Centre exempted fuel from excise duty. In Delhi, petrol price remains unchanged at Rs 95.41 a litre and diesel at Rs 86.67 per litre. This was after the government decided to reduce VAT from 30 per cent t 19.4 per cent on fuel prices that lead to a cut of eight rupees per litre. In Mumbai, a static fuel price with Rs 109.98 for petrol and diesel for Rs 94.14 per litre. Similarly, the prices for fuel remain unchanged in Kolkata at Rs 106.67 a litre for petrol and Rs 89.79 per litre for diesel. Rates of fuel remain unchanged in Chennai as well, petrol and diesel are being retailed at Rs 101.40 and Rs 91.43 a litre respectively.

On third November, the Centre decided to cut excise duty on petrol by five rupees per litre and ten for diesel as to provide relief to consumers who were in grief due to all-time high fuel prices. While the government reduced excise duty of fuel prices, it also requested state governments to reduce value-added tax as well on petrol and diesel to further reduce alleviate the problem of the consumer. The excise duty cut was the highest-ever reduction in excise duty.

28 states and union territories have cut VAT and these include Delhi, Ladakh, Karnataka, Puducherry, Jammu and Kashmir, Sikkim, Mizoram, Himachal Pradesh, Daman and Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Chandigarh, Chhattisgarh, Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Tripura, Gujarat, Nagaland, Punjab, Goa, Meghalaya, Odisha, Rajasthan, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Andaman and Nicobar, Bihar, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana.

The states that did not lower VAT include Maharashtra, Jharkhand and Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Kerala, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Punjab has witnessed the biggest reduction in petrol rates after the deduction VAT and local sales tax while UT of Ladakh witnessed the largest reduction in diesel rates for the same reason.
