- Garbage collection by filling two dumpers ,five jeeps
- Marine Drive area available for use by morning walkers after overnight cleaning
In a commendable effort, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) conducted an extensive overnight cleanliness drive in the Marine Drive area, ensuring it was pristine for morning walkers. This initiative followed a large gathering of cricket enthusiasts who had flocked to Marine Drive on the night of July 4, 2024, to celebrate India’s victory in the T20 Cricket World Cup 2024.
The Solid Waste Management Department of the BMC led the operation, mobilizing around 100 workers alongside NGO volunteers. The clean-up began at 11:30 PM as soon as the crowd dispersed and continued tirelessly until 8:00 AM. Under the supervision of A Division Assistant Commissioner Jaideep More, the team efficiently collected and removed the accumulated waste.
The drive was highly effective, with two large dumpers and five small jeeps filled with garbage, including food wrappers, water bottles, bags, and even shoes and slippers. Special attention was given to recyclable items, with five jeeps full of shoes, slippers, and other items set aside for reprocessing instead of being sent to the landfill.
BMC Commissioner and Administrator Bhushan Gagrani, along with Additional Municipal Commissioner (Western Suburbs) Dr. Sudhakar Shinde, emphasized the importance of maintaining public spaces. Their coordinated efforts ensured that Marine Drive was restored to its clean and welcoming state, much to the delight of the regular morning walkers.
This swift and efficient operation not only underscores the dedication of the BMC’s Solid Waste Management Department but also highlights the significance of community cleanliness and public responsibility. The Marine Drive area, following this thorough clean-up, stands as a testament to the effectiveness of collaborative civic efforts.
