Mumbai’s Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) is looking at acquiring electric buses to replace some of its aging and dilapidated fleet of city buses. Industry sources claim that five electric buses would be added to the BEST bus fleet under a central government scheme. Stress would be on Lithium-ion batteries, which when once charged, would provide a range of 160 km. While a plan is also said to be underway to convert CNG buses into electric propelled ones, the expenditure to do this conversion is likely to cost between Rs.25 and Rs.30 lakh. BEST, claimed industry sources, plans to divert the Rs.10 lakh funding it expects to receive from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation towards the conversion. This is said to be done to curtail the considerable amount of money BEST currently spends on fuel – diesel and CNG.
