To curb the high level of air pollution, particulate matter emissions especially, in Delhi, the Supreme Court has passed an order to not register private diesel passenger vehicles and SUVs of 2000 cc engine capacity and above, until March 31, 2016. The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) has termed the decision as unfortunate. In a statement issued, SIAM has claimed that the order was passed after ignoring a recent study on source apportionment for NCT of Delhi, which was shared with the court. The study, according to SIAM, mentions vehicles to be responsible for only 20 per cent of the pollution in Delhi, 15 per cent of which could be attributed to passenger cars. Contrary to the court’s order, SIAM has sighted, the sale of BS IV vehicles should be encouraged, and the use of older vehicles should be restricted. SIAM’s other suggestions include the construction of bypasses in Delhi, which has been delayed. The construction of bypasses would help to divert truck traffic that is not destined for Delhi. SIAM’s suggestions also include the immediate discontinuation of biomass and paddy fields burning, installation of dust collectors and vacuum cleaners to collect dust on the road kerb sides, and the constitution of an expert committee to plan with quantifiable targets based upon data.
