As Godrej Enterprises Group celebrates its 127Th anniversary, the company unveiled a bold vision to chart a sustainable and innovative path forward, writes Ashish Bhatia.

From pioneering the world’s first spring less lock to introducing India’s first BMS-steered electric forklift, Godrej continues to innovate while staying rooted in its heritage. At a milestone event, Chairman and Managing Director at Godrej Enterprises Group, Jamshyd Godrej and Executive Director, Nyrika Holkar shared insights into the group’s transformative journey and future ambitions. Anil Verma, Executive Director & Chief Executive Officer, of Godrej & Boyce, part of the Godrej Enterprises Group echoed the sentiment with a focus on pioneering efforts in the Material Handling Equipment (MHE) and ancillary business.

A Legacy of Trust and Innovation

The Godrej brand has been synonymous with quality and trust since its inception in 1897. Speaking at the event, Jamshyd N. Godrej, highlighted the company’s enduring legacy. “Over the last 127 years, we’ve built trust with 1.1 billion customers worldwide. This trust is our greatest achievement, and it continues to inspire us to unlock new value,” he remarked.

Godrej Enterprises has redefined its identity to align with its growth ambitions and the evolving needs of its consumers. The group’s refreshed brand identity aims to uphold its core values of integrity, trust, and customer centricity while embracing the future as part of the Group restructuring announced in April 2024 by the Godrej family.

Strategic realignment

To achieve its vision, Godrej Enterprises has reorganised its operations into three distinct business clusters. Under the Consumer First Businesses, the initiatives are focused on enhancing consumer experiences, such as smart and connected home solutions. Under the Nation First Businesses, the strategy is aimed at contributing to India’s progress through sustainable manufacturing and resource optimisation. Under the Future First Businesses, these ventures explore emerging industries such as green hydrogen, advanced battery technology, and recycled construction materials. “Our realignment allows us to focus on innovation and sustainability while preserving the brand as a shared asset. Both sides of the group can now customise the brand under stated guidelines, ensuring it thrives for years to come,” said Jamshyd Godrej.

Sustainability at the core

Sustainability has always been a cornerstone of Godrej’s operations. The group is committed to achieving 50 per cent of its revenue from green products by 2032. This ambitious goal underscores its dedication to environmental stewardship and resource conservation. Nyrika Holkar, emphasised the importance of sustainable practices. She said, “Our responsibility goes beyond offering sustainable products. We aim to shape consumer preferences by encouraging conscious choices that minimise environmental impact.” The group’s engineering and design-led approach ensures that every product aligns with its sustainability goals while delivering value to customers.

Unlocking the potential of smart and connected homes

One of Godrej’s key growth areas is the smart home solutions market, projected to be worth Rs. 42,000 crore in the coming years. With safety and convenience becoming top priorities for consumers post-pandemic, the company is poised to capitalise on this trend. “The shift from standalone devices to integrated smart home solutions is inevitable. Our vision is to serve 10 crore homes with cutting-edge technologies that make life easier and safer,” Nyrika Holkar stated. Advanced analytic and Artificial Intelligence (AI) are central to this strategy, enabling the group to provide holistic solutions tailored to individual customer needs. An overlap and a synergy for the benefit of other segments can’t be ruled out here. 

Design-Led Innovation

Innovation has been the lifeblood of Godrej Enterprises since its inception. From aerospace advancements to electric forklifts, the group continues to push the boundaries of design and functionality. “Design-led innovation allows us to cater to the most discerning customers. Moving up in life is no longer a question of if but when, and we’re here to make that transition seamless,” said Jamshyd Godrej. The company’s emphasis on engineering excellence ensures that its products remain competitive in both domestic and international markets.

Transforming air conditioning adoption

India’s air conditioning market is experiencing a paradigm shift, with adoption rates projected to increase from eight per cent to 50 per cent in the near future. Godrej is leveraging this opportunity by introducing energy-efficient and affordable AC solutions. “Our focus is on delivering sustainable cooling solutions that reduce environmental impact while meeting consumer needs,” explained Nyrika Holkar.
