Held between September 13 and September 17, Automechanika Frankfurt 2016 saw the participation of 4,820 exhibitors from 76 countries, up from 4,660 participants from 74 countries in 2014. Organised by Messe Frankfurt, the biennial automotive fair for aftermarket, showcased innovations and solutions ranging from components to equipment, and from accessories to workshop equipment. Attracting 1.36 lakh visitors from 170 countries, the fair, spread over an area of 592,127 sq. m., inclusive of the ten exhibition halls and an open area, highlighted aftermarket’s contribution towards lightweighting, connectivity, electronics, etc. Knorr-Bremse launched a new brand, ‘EconX’, to focus on re-manufactured products that offer environment friendly solutions to refurbish old trucks. Under ‘EconX’ brand were displayed SN7 disc brakes and electronic clutch actuators. Increasing its aftermarket thrust through distribution partnership with Technomatik in the field of compressed air cylinders, Knorr-Bremse would soon start supplying air, oil, fuel and interior filters for trucks and buses. Having acquired Spheros, Valeo showcased two bus ACs – Citysphere Compact and Thermo E 200/320. Jost, for the first time, showcased spare parts for Mercedes-Benz trailer axles. Also on display were fifth wheel couplings, landing gears and towing hitches the company manufactures. Wulf Gaertner Autoparts showcased heavy-duty stabiliser links under its Meyle brand for commercial vehicles.

Indian participation

As many as 30 Indian auto component manufacturers participated in the show. They did so under the aegis of the Automotive Component Manufacturer’s Association (ACMA). Occupying over 650 sq. m. of space, the participants highlighted their technological competitiveness. The ‘India Day’ celebration by ACMA saw eminent Indian speakers stress upon the opportunities and challenges the Indian automotive industry offers as well as faces. Automotive aftermarket in India is expected to grow to USD 32 billion by 2026 from the current USD 6.5 billion. To support its automotive suppliers and aftermarket forces, India too has got its own Automechanika show. The next event edition is scheduled to be held between March 21 and March 24 next year at Delhi.
