Urban development minister M Venkaiah Naidu has expressed a need for an integrated transport system comprising rail, road and inland waterways to address the problem of traffic congestion and last-mile connectivity in cities while speaking on the sidelines of a book launch in Delhi recently. He mentioned that various transport systems should be connected as part of a symbiotic model. In this direction, the urban development minister would be holding a meeting with the railway, road transport and shipping ministers to examine the possibility of creating integrated transport systems in different parts of the country wherever possible. Mentioning a need to adopt a multi-pronged strategy to resolve the issues of traffic congestion and pollution in urban areas, the minister expressed concern over the growing number of accidents in the country. He gave suggestions for improvement, including that of parking, multi-modal integration at Metro and railway stations, bus stops, bicycle sharing system with tracks for cyclists throughout the city. Naidu also called for an improvement in bus services, development of BRTS corridor, integrated road network, intelligent transport system, capacity-building programme and the Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (UMTA).
