Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC’s) rolled out a new city bus service called ‘Aapli Bus’ (your bus) in December 2016. As part of the initiative, NMC comissioned 20 new buses. They were flagged off by Nitin Gadkari, Minister for Road Transport, Highways and Shipping, and Devendra Fadnavis, Chief Minister of Maharashtra. Five of these buses run on ethanol. The rest of the buses are midi-buses. The newly commissioned buses are part of the 487 buses planned for the new bus service. Fitted with intelligent transport system, the people of Nagpur will be able to track the movement of buses. They will also be able to know the status of the seats left, courtesy a mobile app. Speaking on the occasion, Gadkari said that his ambition is to make Nagpur the first city to have all its buses running on bio-fuel. To realise this ambition, the minister has been promoting the manufacture of bio-fuel (ethanol) not just from molasses but also from rice, wheat straw and bamboo. Averred Gadkari, that a manufacturing unit would be set up in each of the six districts of Nagpur division for producing ethanol and boosting farmers’ income. Criticising the delay in implementing such infrastructure projects, Gadkari is known to have directed NMC to commence the tendering process of 100 city buses that are to be run on biogas and electricity. He also claimed to have advised NMC to look at ways of producing biogas from sewage, and ethanol from soild waste.
