To ensure safety and to avoid blockages, Maharashtra Government has restricted the movement of heavy vehicle for five hours on weekends, claim industry sources. Extended to Mondays and public holidays when the density of traffic is high, it is the ghat section of the expressway where most blockages are known to happen. The decision, said to have been taken jointly by the Highway Safety Patrol (HSP) and expressway authorities, will result in heavy vehicles stopping at the Khalapur toll post between five and 10 pm on a Friday and between seven am and noon on a Saturday. Heavy vehicles going from Pune to Mumbai will be halted at the Urse and Kusgaon toll posts on a Monday between seven am and 10 am. Sources claim that a flexi time table will be implemented for public holidays. The restriction is said to be implemented in part to divert traffic to the old Mumbai-Pune highway, which is a toll road as well. Heavy vehicles carrying essential commodities are exempted. The results thus far are said to have yielded positive.
