If the ministry of road transport has its way, vehicles after the completion of 15 years, will be automatically de-registered. While an ‘automatic de-registration’ mechanism is said to be in the works, the motive behind it is claimed to be an effort to transform the transport sector. At present, a commercial vehicle is mandated to get its fitness certificate renewed every year after it is two years old. With a voluntary scrappage scheme is in the works too, vehicles older than 15 years will need to be re-registered post a fitness test. For those who scrap their old vehicles (over the age of 10 years), the government may offer an attractive excise duty discount. This issue features an article on the voluntary scrappage initiative.
