Automakers are up in arms against piracy, spurious auto components and spares. Tata Motors is said to have conducted as many as 19 raids across the country to weed out spurious parts. The exercise, claim industry sources, has been elaborate, and involved the legal team and spare parts department along with government agencies. The company is known to have conducted raids in New Delhi, Mumbai, Jaipur, Vijayawada and many other locations in the country. Five manufacturers of Tata Motors counterfeit parts, packaging materials and stickers have been identified, and first information reports have been filed. Sanjeev Garg, Vice-president and Global Head (customer care, commercial vehicles), Tata Motors, said that spurious parts like clutch and filters affect not just the aggregate life, they also jeopardise safety. According to an Automotive Component Manufacturers Association (ACMA) source, counterfeit components account for over one-third of the Rs. 40,000 crore business the aftemarket conducts in India every year.
